Be Doers of the Word

‘But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. ‘ James 1:22–24

We have a huge mirror by our door so that I can check my appearance before I go out into the world. That is why I think we have that mirror there my beautiful bride would prefer that it is to decorate the entrance to our home.

But face it. Everyone who leaves our house looks at themselves before they leave.

  • is my hair ok?
  • is my hat on backward?
  • does this jacket look as amazing I as thought on the website?
  • is my fly closed?

To St. James, that mirror is like hearing the Word of God. When you see yourself in the mirror and realize that your hat is on backward or that your fly is open you do something about it.

When you hear or read God’s Word, you act on it. You share that Word to help someone else learn about the amazing mercy and grace of our Father in Heaven, given to us by His dear Son, Jesus Christ.

When we worship and praise Christ’s saving work to others we are asking them to open the doors of their heart to the Holy Spirit. This worship and praise is our action to allow God to work on our family and friends.

But, you ask?

How do I witness to God by worship and praise without offending my friends or without being ridiculed by my family members?

My suggestion is that your efforts to serve them should be your witness. What if you made your bed and cleaned up behind yourself in the kitchen every day for a month? What would your spouse or mom or dad say?

Would they say? “So what do you want now?” or would they say, “What has caused this great change in you? We are so glad that you are cleaning up after yourself!”

To which you reply, “Praise God. Because of Him, I thought I would help more around the house.”

What other kinds of action and service do you believe would witness to God?

Today I encourage you to check your appearance in the mirror and when you do make sure that God is there in you so that all you do for others will be a reflection of Him.
