What is your most valuable possession? Give it away.
‘Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.’ Proverbs 11:24 NLT
What is your most valued possession?
- A diamond ring?
- A watch?
- A t-shirt
What would you do if I, a stranger perhaps from a strange land, came up to you and complimented you on the watch you are wearing.
What if I said, “Hey, I love your watch it looks great on your wrist. Is it a Rolex Submariner? What can you tell me about it?
I am guessing that you would be want to be shy about it, but if you are like me your pride and confidence would overcome your fears and you would tell me about your prized possession.
You would explain the precision, beauty and accuracy of its internal works. You may even show me how the winding crown screws down to aid in the protection of the inner works to ocean depths down to 300 meters.
You would show me how the stainless steel band, not only looks great on your wrist but feels so comfortable you can wear it every day. And, you may demonstrate how the bracelet locks securely to insure that even in the depths of the ocean or surfing you are confident that the your timepiece will remain your companion.
Then. . .
What would you do if I asked, “Would you give me your prized timepiece?”
Would you look around for the nearest Constable or call 911?
Or. . .
Would you just say, “Nope, I have grown attached to this watch and it means a lot to me. I believe that I will keep it.”
“OK.” I would reply and then move on.
No Harm/No Foul.
But what if? You said, “Sure you can have my prized Rolex Submariner!” “It has served me well over the years, and I have other watches I can use that will provide the same value to me.” “Here let’s see if it fits your wrist.”
Granted, the first instance is much more understandable. Everyone takes a step back when a stranger asks for your $10,000.00 or more Rolex.
This represents the concept of scarcity, I don’t know when or from where I will find the resouces to purchase another Rolex.
Versus. . .
The concept of abundance, I am confident that God will bless me with the skill and wisdom to create enough great value for others and in turn receive the resources to purchase another Rolex Submariner.
Now this is all fun to dream. But how do you get yourself into that abundance mind set?
Practice. . .
Pick something that you have been hoarding away for a while. Like a DVD player that you bought just to have a spare. — You remember DVD players?-Put on the online rummage sale page as a give away. Maybe find some other gadgets and gizmos that you could part with without much pain.
Or? Better yet put them up for sale and give the proceeds to a local church or charity. Then all you will really know is that the funds went to support a cause.
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, Matthew 6:3 NIV
What feelings do you imagine you will have when you open up that thankyou card from the local food pantry or hospice facility?
And then. . .
Keep practicing. Chose items that have more value but that you haven’t looked at, used or worn in over a year.
What about those out of fashion necklaces that hang in the jewelry box? What about that television in the spare room that never gets turned on? What about that old motorcycle in the shed that no one wants to ride?
Just take a minute and look around the room. What is there that you could live without?
Now let’s take it to the next level? What do you have that you would really miss if it was gone?
- A diamond ring you seldom wear
- That hunk of gold from a broken crown
- What about that whale tail necklace your wife gave you?
- What about your prized truck?
When you have a scarcity mindset the thought of losing one of these items is scary and the idea of giving them away? FORGET IT! AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN!
This Practice thing just got outta hand!
I would rather give away my leather coat and gloves in a snowstorm than to part with my truck.
What if you could?
What if your faith and courage was so strong that no matter what you would survive. Better than that you would THRIVE.
Remember the story from Genesis 22. God told Abraham to take his son Isaac to the mountain and kill him and offer Isaac as a burnt sacrifice.
Abraham took Isaac and a sword and made Isaac carry the wood for the fire. Can you imagine the faith that it took to just make this journey.
And. . .
When Isaac asked where was the lamb for the sacrifice, Abraham answered, “God will provide.”
And just as Abraham was about to kill Isaac with the sword an Angel appeared and stopped him. When Abraham looked around, he saw a ram tangled by his horns in a bush. Abraham released Isaac and then captured and sacrificed the ram instead.
God did provide!
What am I afraid of more? God providing? Or my wife being mad because I gave away the gifts she gave me?
I suppose that in this world I am more afraid of my wife being mad than I am afraid of God being able to provide the resources to replace the missing items.
Creating an abundance state of mind is a skill that requires confidence, faith and practice.
And I ask God to help you and me build our faith that no matter the circumstances we have the confidence to Give It Away.
