Hope in One Hand

There is a saying here in flyover country, “Hope in one hand and spit in the other now look into your hands and see which has more?” People here don’t like to admit that they depend on hope and faith.

But, we do…

We depend on God’s good grace and the faith that He sends us through His Holy Spirit to survive.

We depend on faith and hope in God’s dear Son, Jesus Christ, who came to earth to suffer the penalty for our sins and to win eternal life for us through His innocent death and bodily resurrection.

Yes, we would rather believe that we have earned the food on the table and the roof over our heads, and the gas in the car by our own sweat and blood; but they are gifts from God.

… Even the jobs we have are gifts of God. Opportunities to witness to His glory. Whether we are the CEO or the janitor, our job is our witness to the faith and hope that we have in our Heavenly Father.

Because we have hope: We do the paperwork, we wash our children’s dirty clothes, we crawl under the house into the mud and muck to repair the sump pump.

Yes, when we spit in one hand and hope in the other we see much, much more in the hand filled with hope. We see God’s gifts:

  • Beautiful flowers from the seeds that we sowed
