And as Jesus and his disciples were preparing for the Passover meal, Jesus wrapped a towel around His waist and took a basin and began washing the disciples feet. And when He had finished He directed them saying, “I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. John 13

“Do I gotta go to church today?” You ask yourself as the warm and inviting blankets envelope you.

And then you think, “Yes, I want to go to church today, that is where I go to be washed.”

Washed you ask? Yes, we go to be reminded of the washing we received in baptism.

We go to have our sins washed away by the water and the Word and to be forgiven.

We go to church because that is where God is. He is present in the Word, He is present in the water, He is present in the bread and wine.

And church is where we learn to receive the gifts of grace, mercy, and love and to share these gifts our neighbors who do not know the power of God’s gifts.

So, we go to church to be washed and to learn how and to be encouraged to wash the feet of our brothers and sisters, in Jesus. And we learn to wash the feet of those who have not yet, felt the power of God’s saving grace through His dear Son, Jesus Christ.

Oh, Heavenly Father, we go attend church to gratefully receive your gifts of forgiveness, grace, mercy and love. Send your Spirit on us that we may serve our brothers and sisters as You first served us. Amen
